The Chelsea Flower Show

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is an institution in London.

The Chelsea event is the most famous flower show in the United Kingdon and perhaps in the world, attracting visitors from all continents.  As such, it is a beloved event that opens with much fanfare, including a visit from the Queen and her royal companions.

It is the hottest ticket in town during five days in early May.  And it is so very British.

As an American with a very black thumb, I am not a member of the Flower Fan Club.  Yet, I do enjoy the event every year because who wouldn’t like to walk into a giant room filled with beautiful fragrant floral displays?

Though I lack expertise, I appreciate the meticulous care and earnest emphasis placed on gardens throughout London.  The city is always in bloom.  The Chelsea Flower show celebrates that passion and is a flower wonderland filled with all kinds of floral representations.  There is

Classic perfection:

Exotic designs:

Fanciful settings:

Creative installations:

Beautiful bright bouquets:

Idyllic gardens:

After browsing among the blooms, Jeff and I were ready for a late dinner.  I think the artistic presentation of our lobster tempura rivaled some of those creative flower displays!!!

I appreciate a pretty flower just as much as anyone else.  But, if I’m honest, I can’t really understand the masses that travel from near and far to make the annual pilgrimage.  The hushed oohs and aahs, the obsessive picture taking, the exuberant coos of appreciation, the ardent reverence.  It all escapes me a bit.

And yet, it is always good to take time to smell the flowers.
